Diaphragm is a barrier method of birth control. It comprises of a dome like structure made out of thin rubber with a flexible rim. Diaphragms are generally used in combination with spermicides. The spermicide is help by the diaphragm right over the cervix. It should not be removed before six to eight hours after intercourse for effective birth control. They should not be inserted before than two hours of sexual intercourse as the spermicide is rendered ineffective after two hours. Diaphragms offer good but not complete protection against sexually transmitted diseases and infections.

However it is less popular than other barrier methods of birth control like condoms and cervical caps as they are far more easy to use and are convenient during intercourse. If it gets dislocated during sex, emergency contraception should be considered as a backup birth control measure. Also, diaphragms can get damaged by the use of oil based creams and lubricants. Be careful while taking out and inserting the diaphragm. Follow the prescribed instructions carefully. Diaphragm for birth control
