Your Baby's Development in the First Trimester of Pregnancy

This stage includes the first three months of your baby's development. After conception, the fertilized egg moves down the fallopian tubes and divides into two cells. From two cells, it divides into four, eight and so forth until it forms a solid ball of cells. The ball of cells then enters the uterus and attaches itself to the uterine wall. The ball of cells is referred to as the embryo at this stage. It will develop into a baby and to protect the baby the ball of cells also develops into umbilical cord, the placenta and the amniotic sac. As the ball of cells attaches itself to the uterine wall, the surrounding tissue produces hormones to support the pregnancy. This stage occurs during the first three weeks. Here are the lists of your baby's development starting from week 4:

Week 4: the embryo starts to develop major organ systems like brain and spinal cord; nervous systems; muscles and blood.

Week 5: during this week, you can feel the first heartbeat of your baby. Your baby's length reaches 2 mm.

Week 6: in this week, the embryo starts to develop facial features and reaches 6 mm in length.

Week 7: your baby's spinal cord and brain are developing and it lies within a sac of membranes. The baby will be supported by amniotic fluid. During this week, nostrils and lips of your baby appear and the eyes can be seen under the skin.

Week 8: you baby's limbs appears during this week while its hands and feet are taking shape. Your baby now reaches 1.3 cm in length.

Week 9: your baby develops into a fetus not an embryo any longer. Its embryonic tail disappears. Fingers and toes are forming while the limbs are growing fast. Your baby may start moving but you may not feel it yet.

Week 10: during this week, the length of your baby reaches 2.5 cm with tiny fingers and toes.

Week 11: the internal organs of your baby are all formed including its ovary or testicle. That's why; you can determine your baby's sex during this week easily.

Week 12: your baby's head becomes more rounded. The eyelids appear and closed over the eyes. Your baby is now moving but still you can't feel its motion.
