Skin Changes for Women in Their Second Trimester of Pregnancy

The second trimester of a women's pregnancy can involve many scary changes to the body. One of the most noticeable changes comes in a women's skin. With the dramatic rise in estrogen, increase in body weight and overall hormonal craziness the skin goes through a major transformation. With each pregnancy there are different skin conditions that may occur to a woman. While these skin conditions are not all encompassing, these are some of the most common changes that take place to a women's skin.

One of the most common new skin conditions is a dark line (linea nigra) that starts on the lower abdomen and runs from the pubic bone up to the navel. As the due date gets closer, this line tends to get darker and wider, expanding with the stomach. This is usually seen more in women with darker skin and is rare for women with lighter skin tone. This line will fade away after the pregnancy like most other pregnancy related skin changes.

A mask-like look may surround the cheeks, nose and eyes of mother to be. This darkening called chloasma is a very common trait of pregnant women. Sometimes called the "mask of pregnancy", this can be darkened by extended exposure to the sun.

With estrogen levels soaring in the body, the blood vessels often appear on the surface of the skin. Red spots over the skin are a sign of these blood vessels surfacing. These spots are easy to spot from acne because once they are touched they turn white. These spots will usually instantly disappear after labor and are usually never seen again, at least not until another pregnancy.

Palmar erythema, or reddening of the hand, is often a common sign of pregnancy. This reddening, similar to the red spots, is also a clear sign of high levels of estrogen in the body. Like the red spots, this will often subside after delivering your baby.

Multiple skin tags will often appear on the body during pregnancy. The formation of these tags is unknown and they will often fade over time. Many women get nervous about these after pregnancy, but find they eventually go away.

Pregnancy is the most dramatic change that can happen to a women's body. Before contacting a dermatologist or panicking, women should know that there will be a dramatic change in their bodies. One of the most promising things about these skin changes is that they are almost always temporary and will subside soon after pregnancy.
