When something does seem to be going wrong and you can't immediately identify the problem this can be highly distressing. Here are just two of the unusual things that can happen.

Placental Abruption

Placental abruption is when the placental lining separates from the uterus. This is the most common cause of late pregnancy bleeding which is one symptom in some cases. Usually this occurs around 20 weeks into the pregnancy and has a prevalence of about 1%. This is a serious matter that needs to be addressed as depending on the degree of separation, there is a mortality rate of about 20-40%. This is another reason why it is so important to be aware of issues such as placental abruption - so that you can identify worrying symptoms and get medical help. Here are some other symptoms of placental abruption: pain in the uterus, contractions that don't stop, abdominal tenderness, vaginal bleeding in some cases, enlarged uterus and pallor.

Placenta Praevia

Placenta Praevia is a similar condition. Here an placenta is attached to the uterine wall which may cover the cervix. This can occur during the first trimester but will usually be later on. It is another cause of vaginal bleeding and will affect around.05% of pregnancies. The most common symptoms are bright red vaginal bleeding which starts mildly and can increase during placental separation. However the uterus will be non-tender and relaxed though often the fetus will be in an unusual position.

In any case it is important to make sure that you go to the doctor should you have unusual vaginal bleeding, and should you notice other symptoms such as abdominal pain. There are many different complications and issues surrounding pregnancy and often it will be nothing serious that is causing the problem, however it is still important to make sure that you get the situation checked as soon as possible to avoid further complications. Meanwhile make sure as a pregnant mother to inform yourself as fully as possible about all the stages and symptoms of pregnancy and about all the potential problems and complications. This way you will be ready in the case of problems.
