Infertility affects many women in the United States, and thanks to advanced science, there have been many successful births of woman that could normally not conceive. With in vitro fertilization, the egg is fertilized outside of the woman's ovaries. Couples who cannot conceive often choose this infertility treatment which can be quite expensive as there is no guarantee that the treatment will be successful. However, it does bring the hope for a child.
If you are considering IVF procedure then the first step is to discuss the procedure with your physician who will refer you to a reputable fertility clinic. Most facilities will accept check, cash or major credit card for the portion of the monies in which your insurance does not cover. Most facilities will also have financing plans which you can discuss.
The facility will test to determine if there may be infertility in both the male and the woman. The sperm of the male will be tested for morphology (structure), motility and quantity and the hormones of the woman will be tested and examined for possible causes such as endometriosis. Some issues that may be present may be able to be resolved to ensure a successful pregnancy.
Although the process is relatively simple, the male and female will both need to take daily injections of hormones. By doing so the stimulation of producing eggs occurs in the woman's ovaries. Some woman may have side effects.
You will also want to be prepared for the chance of multiple births. If this is not something that your doctor discusses with you, make sure you discuss it with your doctor. With IVF implantation of more than one embryo is performed to increase the chances of survival, allowing for a higher success rate.
You will want to discuss with your doctor all steps involved in the IVF procedure. After the process of injection, the woman's eggs are then retrieved and fertilized with the male's sperm and then the incubation period begins. Healthy embryos will then be implanted into the womb of the woman. Bed rest is required after this step for at least 24 to 48 hours.
Once the eggs have been implanted you will then need to inject progesterone daily for two weeks. At the end of the two weeks, it will then be time for a pregnancy test.
Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that the results of the pregnancy test will be positive. The success rate will depend on many factors such as the woman's age. The woman can have the procedure more than once, however, cost may influence whether she will be able to have the procedure. And, with additional attempts, that is not to say that they will be successful as well.
If IVF treatments are unsuccessful, there are other options which can be discussed with your doctor such as ICSI infertility treatment in which the sperm of the male is injected into the woman's egg or you may consider a surrogate mother.
