Of course many articles and published literature say breastfeeding will provide the best nutrition and overall health for you and your baby. But choosing to do it really boils down to if you have the time, support and dedication.
Breastfeeding is very beneficial to you as a mother and to your child. Such as, it provides the nutrients and vitamins needed for your baby to grow and become less prone to contracting diseases such as Diabetes, Allergies and Ear infections. As a breastfeeding mother it can provide a decrease in emotional stress and postpartum stress.
But let's face it! The time and effort needed in breastfeeding is just so grand. Especially, when you are a working mother and have additional duties to take care of. Plus, because we don't see many breastfeeding women out there we're not able to learn by viewing others. Therefore, just because breastfeeding is a natural thing most of us have to learn and perfect the skill by taking classes, reading educational info and by receiving as much advice as we can from others.
So if you are pregnant and are wondering if you should breastfeed I suggest you consider the following. First obtain and read as much literature as you can on breastfeeding. Then ask yourself these top questions...
1. Do you actually have the time to do it - If you have the time to do it then do it and don't question yourself. You and your child will benefit from it.
2. Are you willing to dedicate yourself - One of the most important factors of breastfeeding is time. You will have to put in the effort and follow through with it.
3. Will you have your spouse's support - Having your spouse's support will help you if you need him to pick up some of the things needing to get done at home. Remember you will be the sole source of feeding for your baby. So, having his support will help.
4. Will you need to be on any type of medication that may harm your child - If not great! But if so please make sure to consult with your Dr about it to see what your options are.
Lastly, don' be scared if you decide to breastfeed and don't be ashamed if you don't. Be excited for the new addition to your family and most of all be proud in that you have made the best choice for you and your family.
